Press Release

Jim Dougherty, Supervisor, is delighted to announce that “The Town has hired Bethany Ortmann as its Recreation Director to succeed Garth Griffin who is retiring after 36 years of distinguished and devoted service to the Town and its residents as Recreation Director”.

Bethany has extensive experience in recreation and athletics, working with both seniors and young folks. She served as Camp Nurse and then Head Counselor at the Art Farm Day Camp in Bridgehampton, working with children, and subsequently served as Recreation Leader for Senior Services in Victor, NY. Her athletic activities include volley ball coaching and serving as a Summer Camp Director at Sag Harbor High School.

Bethany has a Bachelor of Science degree in Recreation and Leisure Studies and a Master of Arts in Communication, both from the State University of New York.

“The Town Board joins me in welcoming Bethany to this exciting and critically important position and we look forward to working with Bethany to continue our current Town recreation program and to actively explore with her new initiatives in this critically important Island activity,” Dougherty added.

“We salute Garth Griffin for his many years of devoted service to the Island, thank him and wish him well as he moves on. We will miss Garth and are  pleased he will remain a familiar face on the island”, Dougherty concluded.

It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to
Shelter Island Town’s Internet site.
We have developed this website to provide you with important information about Town government - - which will enable you to become a more informed citizen. We have also included a Community Calendar--let us know if your group is planning a community event.

A recent addition to this website is our town's homeowner handbook. I believe that you will find this to be a useful and informative guide to living on our special island.

You will find minutes of the various appointed boards such as the Planning Board, and the Zoning Board of Appeals. There's a directory of all elected officials, department heads, committee members.

We are also very pleased to provide you with a special feature - - the entire Shelter Island Town Code - - at no cost and user friendly. Our site also has useful links to other web sites for visitor and tourist information.

Finally, the recent news section of this site has information about new town plans and initiatives. Email me your thoughts about them. Keep checking to find out what's new.

I invite you to familiarize yourself with our web site, and to return and visit often. We look forward to your feedback so we may continue to expand and improve the content of this site.
