The Shelter Island Highway Department is responsible for a number of services and touches every area of Shelter Island.  We consist of Public Works, Highway, Landfill deparments. We are responsible for the following jobs:

 

  • Cutting brush
  • Plowing snow
  • Sanding for ice control
  • Repaving of roads
  • Mowing sides of roads
  • Beach Cleaning
  • Garbage Can pick - up
  • Building maintenance
  • Road and Waterway Signs
  • Recycling area

The Highway Department has 15 fulltime employees that are shared between the various areas.  The employees range from - Laborers, Truck drivers, Heavy equipment operators, Maintenance man, Mechanic and Labor crew leaders.   

As the Superintendent of Highways Mark Ketcham works closely with community service clubs and organizations to continue to keep the island beautiful.  The following clubs/organizations are part of the continuing effort to keep the island beautiful: The Shelter Island Garden Club, Friends of Trees, Shelter Island Country Club and many neighborhood associations.
