FAQs
- Do I need a permit for a Driveway or a Driveway Apron?

Yes, you now need a permit for both a driveway and/or a driveway apron. The fee is $300.
Please contact Building office if doing a driveway because there are other factors that may come into question.
- Do I need a permit for a generator? HVAC?

- Do I need a permit for a shed?
-
Yes you need a permit for a shed, carports, gazebos, outdoor showers, pergolas etc. The structure needs to comply with setbacks. The fee is $175.
Please be aware that home improvements must be performed by a licensed contractor, holding a Shelter Island license. Not all off-island contractors have a local license. Ask to see it, or call the Building Department to verify 631-749-0772. The Fee for a Home Improvement License is $250 plus proof of your liability and workmen's comp certificates must be submitted.
Did you know that if you had to reconstruct or rebuild a structure that was already there and you are rebuilding it in-place/in-kind you still need a permit and it must conform to the setbacks. It is not "grandfathered in".
